Plug-and-play toilets for airports

With its temporary toilet facilities, Plugaloo bridges sanitary bottlenecks at airports. Geberit supports the company with sanitary know-how and a comprehensive product range.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is a major international hub. More than 70 million travellers pass through its spacious halls every year. These high visitor numbers, different cultures and non-stop operation place high demands on the sanitary facilities.

In 2018, Schiphol Airport was looking for a temporary toilet solution to bridge renovation periods – and turned to Rogier Doffegnies, whose company Airport Creators specialises in advising airports. “A standard solution was out of the question,” he explains. So the idea of the modular sanitary concept Plugaloo was born, which from the outset takes into account all the specific requirements of an airport, from logistics and regulations to maintenance and quick assembly and disassembly.

Teamwork for a carefully considered system

For the concept development, Airport Creators teamed up with interior designers INTOS and sanitary specialists Geberit. “Geberit impressed us with the quality of their products, their reliability in operation and easy servicing,” explains Rogier Doffegnies. Together they developed a modular system with standardised elements that can be flexibly combined. All elements are prefabricated and can be assembled into complete sanitary facilities in less than 24 hours. The only requirement is a power, water and wastewater connection less than 200 metres away.

Plugaloo uses a wide range of Geberit products, from Duofix installation elements to toilets and urinals, as well as washbasin taps and drainage pipes. “We can optionally network the devices with Geberit Connect, which provides us with valuable information about frequency of use,” adds Armand Gademan, Account Manager at Geberit in the Netherlands. This means that cleaning and maintenance work can be carried out in a more targeted manner, thus minimising effort and costs.

Successful field test

Originally planned as a temporary measure, the first system at Schiphol Airport has now been operating successfully for over six years. Every single toilet has been used by over 100,000 people a year – an intensive field test. Additional installations at other airports have since followed. Just recently, a version adapted to the North American market was put into operation in Montreal, Canada. Plugaloo has taken off and is ready to implement the concept in airports worldwide – with Geberit on board.
