A success story
The history of Geberit began in 1874 as a one-man business in Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland. With innovations such as the first plastic and concealed cistern, the company set early milestones in sanitary technology. The family business of yesteryear has developed into the European market leader for sanitary products.
1874
The company founder
In August 1874, 24-year-old Albert Gebert (1850–1909) opens a workshop in Rapperswil (CH) and offers tinsmith work, lightning conductors and pipe installations.
1905
The Phoenix
Albert Gebert invents the first cistern manufactured in Switzerland and calls it "Phoenix". The wooden cistern is lined with lead, the fittings are made of metal.
1909
The 2nd generation
Albert Emil (1880–1969; pictured) and his brother Leo (1888–1964) take over the company. The two brothers are innovative and register around 40 of their own developments with the patent office by the mid-1950s.
1921
Factory in Rapperswil (CH)
In the middle of World War I, the Gebert brothers decide to build a factory in Rapperswil. They move into the new building in 1921.
1929
Foreign branch in Paris
The Geberts venture to set up a branch in Paris. Thanks to personal relationships and good language skills, they win major orders.
1935
First plastic application
The company ventures into the still young field of plastics processing—a groundbreaking step. From 1935 onwards, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is also used for individual components of the flush valve.
1952
The first PVC cistern
After years of experimentation, the time has come: the first cistern made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is ready for series production. It quickly becomes a bestseller.
1953
The 3rd generation takes over
Heinrich (1917–2007; left) and Klaus Gebert (1926–1998) take over the management of the company and build it into a leading sanitary technology group.
The "Geberit" brand
The term "Geberit" is registered as a trademark. The German subsidiary is founded under this name as early as 1955, but in Switzerland the company is not renamed Geberit until 1976.
1955
Expansion into Germany
The Gebert family ventures to expand abroad and opens a trading branch in Pfullendorf in southern Germany, building its first factory shortly afterwards.
1956
The technical advisory service
A technical advisory service has been set up to support and train installers, planners and building owners in the correct use of the products.
The PE drain range
In the 1950s, polyethylene (PE) is still a young material. Nevertheless, siphons, bathtub drains and fittings made of PE are produced in Rapperswil from 1956.
1962
New plant in Jona (CH)
The factory in Rapperswil is bursting at the seams, which is why a new plant is built in the neighbouring municipality of Jona, which is occupied from 1962 and officially opened in 1965.
1964
First concealed cistern
Geberit launches a plastic cistern for installation in the wall. Initially not a big hit, concealed cisterns change the look of bathrooms all over the world from the 1980s onwards.
1966
Entry into waste water technology
The PE range is extended to cover the entire domestic drainage system. Geberit launches a training campaign throughout Europe to convince the sanitary industry of its advantages.
1967
New plant in Pfullendorf (DE)
Geberit builds a larger plant on the outskirts of Pfullendorf and moves in in 1967. Today, this is the Group's largest site with 1500 employees.
1971
The Sovent from PE
Geberit acquires the licence to manufacture a sophisticated fitting for a stack: the Sovent. It proves its worth primarily in high-rise buildings and is constantly being optimised.
1972
The Pottenbrunn plant (AT)
Geberit opens another production plant 60 kilometres west of Vienna. The plant is subsequently expanded again and again.
New technology for cisterns
Blow moulding technology is introduced; this enables the rationalised production of cisterns.
1976
Expansion into the USA
Geberit expands into the USA and establishes the subsidiary Geberit Manufacturing Inc. with its headquarters in Michigan City, Indiana.
Geberit becomes a holding
Geberit’s corporate structure is reorganised and Geberit Holding SA established.
1977
First installation systems
With the introduction of installation systems, the range of products is expanded. Montagefix is the first installation system from Geberit. It considerably simplifies the installation of sanitary technology in pre-walls.
1978
The first shower toilet
Geberit launches Geberella, their first toilet seat with a shower function. Just one year later, a complete system is added to the range. Both models are made entirely of plastic.
1979
Pluvia roof drainage
Geberit adopts an innovative system for roof drainage using negative pressure and calls it Pluvia from 1985. Software for calculating the system design is offered as early as 1986.
1984
Saving water made easy
Thanks to revised building regulations, a flush-stop function can be introduced for the toilet flush. This allows the flushing process to be cancelled at any time.
1985
Acquisition of Sanbloc
Acquisition of Sanbloc GmbH in Weilheim (DE). This company manufactures prefabrication components.
1989
Soundproofed waste water pipes
With Silent PE, Geberit launches a sound insulation system for domestic drainage. It consists of PE fittings that are coated with an additional plastic compound.
The first supply system
Participation in a company in western Switzerland that has developed a composite pipe made of metal and plastic - called Mepla. Geberit develops the system further and takes over the company completely in 2004.
1990
First environmental strategy
The Board of Directors decides to develop an environmental strategy. The first environmental manager is appointed in 1992 and the first Group-wide sustainability report is published in 2004.
1991
Withdrawal from day-to-day business
Klaus Gebert (left) retires from operational management but remains Chairman of the Board of Directors. Günter F. Kelm (right) is appointed CEO.
1993
The GIS installation system
GIS impresses with a small number of basic components and simple assembly using standard tools. It is ideal for the prefabrication of fully equipped sanitary walls.
1994
The Lichtenstein plant (DE)
Geberit decides to manufacture its own installation systems. A plant for the processing of sheet metal is built in Lichtenstein in the eastern German state of Saxony and inaugurated in 1994.
1995
Production of PE pipes in Italy
Deriplast S.p.A., a company specializing in the manufacture of PE pipes based in Villadose (IT), in which a stake was acquired in 1989, is completely taken over, further expanded, and modernized.
1996
The Duofix installation system
Duofix installation elements are suitable for installations that are created using drywall technology. Today, they are the most frequently used installation elements in the sanitary sector.
The dual flush
The dual flush with two buttons for the small and large flush is introduced. It quickly establishes itself as the standard, significantly reducing water consumption for toilet flushing.
Joint ventures in China
Geberit ventures into the Far East and acquires a stake in a manufacturer of plastic cisterns in Shanghai and a manufacturer of filler and flush valves on the island of Daju.
1997
Prosan is acquired
Prosan, a company based in Ruše (SI), is acquired. It produces concealed cisterns and interior fittings for ceramic cisterns.
The building physics laboratory
The five-storey laboratory building, which is acoustically decoupled from the environment, is used for realistic tests in the fields of building acoustics and structural analysis.
Family shareholders sell company
The family shareholders sell the company to the British investment company Doughty Hanson & Co. The Group Executive Board, together with other executive managers, acquires an interest in the company and thus preserves the operational independence of the Geberit Group.
1998
Sales surpass one billion Swiss francs
For the first time, Geberit Group sales surpass one billion Swiss francs. The company begins preparations for a listing on the stock exchange.
1999
Going public
Geberit successfully goes public on the Swiss Stock Exchange. At the same time, it introduces an attractive employee participation plan.
2002
Acquisition of Chicago Faucet, USA
After unsuccessful attempts to gain a foothold in the USA with plastic cisterns, the acquisition of faucet manufacturer Chicago Faucet marks a change in strategy.
2004
Acquisition of Mapress
The acquisition of Mapress in the German Rhineland adds a high-quality metal supply system and press fittings to the portfolio. This opens up new markets.
CEO stands down
Günter F. Kelm (left) stands down from his position as CEO as of 31 December and is replaced by his successor Albert M. Baehny (right).
“Know-How Installed”
The marketing slogan (claim) “Know-How Installed” is introduced. From this time on, it can be seen on packaging, amongst other things.
Acquisition of Huter
After many years of co-operation with the Austrian sheet metal processor Huter in Matrei (AT), Geberit takes over this company, which is one of the leading suppliers of prefabricated bathrooms.
2005
Foundation of GISA
From the mid-1990s, the company systematically gains a foothold in markets outside Europe. Geberit International Sales AG (GISA) is founded to better support these activities.
Withdrawal from underground work
Geberit splits from Deriplast’s underground piping systems segment. The production of PE and Silent-db20 pipes as well as the manufacture of special piping components remain at the Villadose site (IT).
2007
First code of conduct
Geberit introduces respective codes of conduct for employees and suppliers.
2008
First social project with apprentices
Geberit runs a social project for the first time, with eight apprentices taking part. The project is based at the “Colegio Pomasqui” in Quito (EC).
2009
AquaClean is the new name for shower toilets
The shower toilet is relaunched under the name Geberit AquaClean in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The core message of the advertising campaign is "I Love Water".
2010
The Monolith sanitary module
The Monolith sanitary module has been developed as an attractive alternative to normal exposed cisterns. It is used in both renovations and new build.

2011
Geberit on Tour
The “Geberit On Tour” campaign is launched in several European countries. The technical advisors travel through their countries in stages in order to pass on their know-how on site.
New Chairman of the Board of Directors
Günter F. Kelm steps down as Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the General Meeting, Albert M. Baehny (pictured) is elected his successor.
2013
New plant in India
There is great potential for concealed cisterns in India. Alpha, a model specially developed for this market, is being produced in a newly built plant in Pune in western India.
2015
Takeover of Sanitec
Geberit takes over the Finnish Sanitec Group, Europe’s leading provider of ceramic appliances. The Sanitec Group is home to well-known brands such as Keramag, Ifö, Kolo, Allia and Pozzi-Ginori. With the integration of Sanitec Geberit combines leading sanitary technology with ceramic expertise and design.
New CEO
Christian Buhl, the successor to Albert M. Baehny, takes up his new role as CEO on 1 January 2015.
The TurboFlush
The AquaClean Mera launches the TurboFlush spin flush technology. The rinsing water, which is channelled into the side of the ceramic, creates a vortex that ensures quiet and clean rinsing.
New plant in Slovenia
The opening of the new plant in Ruše is celebrated. Der Werkneubau in Ruše wird feierlich eröffnet. The new plant in Slovenia is state-of-the-art and particularly energy-efficient—thanks to waste heat utilization and the elimination of fossil fuels.
2017
Expertise in front of and behind the wall
“Know-How Installed” has been joined by the claim “Design Meets Function” in order to bring the company’s expertise in front of and behind the wall to the attention of a wider audience.
2019
SuperTube technology
With SuperTube, Geberit is revolutionising the wastewater downpipe in high-rise buildings: Sophisticated fittings set the water in rotation and generate a constant column of air - even in the case of deflections. Pune is the site of the world's first deployment of the new technology. The efficient drainage system is installed in the “Gateway Towers 1” construction project.
The Geberit ONE bathroom series
The new Geberit ONE bathroom series is a manifestation of the Sanitec integration strategy: invisible sanitary technology combined with beautifully designed products in front of the wall create new added value.
Enervit kiln technology
Ten kilns in seven ceramics plants are now fitted with Enervit burner technology. As a result, around 27,500 MWh of natural gas and 6,500 tonnes of CO₂ can be saved each year.
Brand consolidation: The Geberit ceramic brand
In order to create a clear brand focus in advertising and communication, the ceramic brand Keramag - later also Allia, Sphinx and Pozzi-Ginorei - is replaced by the Geberit brand.
Better bathrooms, better lives
With the campaign “Better bathrooms, better lives”, Geberit has set out on the path of communicating directly with the end user. The campaign focuses on their most important requirements – cleanliness, optimisation of space, comfort, user-friendliness, accessibility and design.
2021
Major product launch: Geberit FlowFit
With Geberit FlowFit a new piping system for drinking water and heating applications is introduced. The pressfittings are establishing new standards in terms of easy and reliable installation, but also in terms of their flow characteristics. The development is financially one of the most significant development projects in the history of Geberit.
Geberit defies te COVID-19 crisis
In 2021, the Geberit Group achieved its strongest sales growth since going public in 1999. In the last six quarters, sales grew around three times faster than usual. And, from an operational point of view, under very challenging circumstances due to the coronavirus pandemic.
2022
New CO₂ strategy
The new CO2 strategy will be integrated into all relevant business processes in future. As a result, Geberit aims for a CO2 reduction of 5% per year in the medium term, in relation to currency-adjusted net sales.
2023
Extension of spare parts availability
Geberit now ensures 50 years of spare parts availability for components of the concealed cistern.

150th anniversary
Geberit celebrates its 150th anniversary.
