E-Weasel for the logistics yard
Yard vehicle for group logistics Pfullendorf (DE)

An electric yard vehicle has recently been introduced at the Geberit Group Logistics truck yard in Pfullendorf (DE). A comparison with diesel vehicles reveals some interesting findings in everyday use.

Three so-called yard vehicles are constantly in operation at the Geberit Group Logistics truck transshipment point in Pfullendorf. They move the semi-trailers and swap bodies to the loading ramps and back to the parking spaces. This significantly reduces the number of truck drivers from near and far who drive around the yard.

The yard vehicles are still affectionately known as “Weasel“ due to an earlier model name. Two of them are diesel-powered – the “Diesel Weasel“. The third has been an electric “E-Weasel“ since this year. The vehicles are now being put to the test.

Purchase vs. operating costs

“The E-Weasel is more expensive to purchase than the Diesel Weasel, but it has other advantages,“ says Fabienne Huff, the purchaser responsible. Reduced repair and maintenance costs offset the higher purchase costs, for example. In addition, the E-Wiesel accelerates faster, is more comfortable to drive, generates less noise and produces no exhaust fumes.

These advantages are particularly popular with drivers. “The E-Weasel is so quiet that the radio is almost annoying when driving,“ says one mischievously. But its agile handling is also a big advantage, as it makes it easier to manoeuvre on the site. “At first, many yard drivers were sceptical. But for me, it's clear: I much prefer driving the E-Weasel,“ emphasises one.

No exhaust fumes in your face

Finally, cleaner air has a positive impact on sustainability calculations. The E-Wiesel reduces CO2 emissions by 42 tonnes, which is equivalent to around seven trips around the world in an average petrol car. But the cleaner air also has benefits in everyday life: drivers sometimes have to walk past the running vehicle to perform manual manoeuvres on ramps or trailers and swap bodies. “With the E-Weasel, there are no more diesel fumes when working near the truck or walking past it. The employees really appreciate that.“
