A bakery like no other

Coop distribution centre, Schafisheim (CH)

With the opening of the new distribution centre in Schafisheim – a village with ideal transport links – the Swiss retail chain Coop catapulted itself into a new dimension in terms of logistics.

Around 600 employees make up to 60,000 tonnes of bread and baked goods in Schafisheim each year. In addition to the large bakery and patisserie, the gigantic complex also comprises a national cold-storage warehouse and a regional distribution centre with refrigeration facilities, an empties centre and a biomass power plant. Such a multifunctional centre requires a whole host of different supply systems for compressed air, ice water, natural gas, cold water, hot water, extinguishing water and other media.

Pressing from dawn till dusk
Laid end to end, the Geberit Mapress Stainless Steel pipes installed here would stretch an impressive 36 kilometres. It took around 15,000 man-hours to install the pipes with diameters of 54 to 108 mm. “25 installer pressed Mapress fittings from dawn till dusk for weeks on end,” recollects Jetmir Rochi, foreman at ID Gebäudetechnik AG.

«Geberit helped us out by providing additional pressing tools, which enabled us to work without interruption.»
