Successful knowledge transfer
Career steps of a design engineer
Design engineer Malashree Mandya Kumarswamy (34) loves challenges. There are many of them in the construction industry - especially in India, where cities are growing rapidly.
India is growing rapidly. According to the online statistics portal Statista, the country's total population is set to rise to 1.454 billion by 2025. The cities have a space problem. And the construction industry is challenged.
Malashree Mandya Kumarswamy loves challenges like these. ‘On the one hand, our country needs better building quality and, on the other, more space-saving solutions,’ says the 34-year-old. As a design engineer, she dealt with Indian building standards and norms at her first two employers. She became aware of Geberit via social media. A whole new world opened up to her. ‘I was very interested in the innovative products and projects in the European markets. I wasn't familiar with these advanced technologies before,’ she says.
Equipped with knowledge
Intrigued by this, Malashree Mandya Kumarswamy joined Geberit in Bangalore as a senior engineer in the Building Drainage department in November 2014. She familiarised herself with European norms and standards and quickly acquired extensive knowledge of the SuperTube and Pluvia drainage systems.
Part of her job is to plan and record the entire pipework and drainage systems and to carry out hydraulic calculations. She does this for construction projects such as airports, hospitals, tower blocks and industrial buildings in the cities of Pune and Ahmedabad in western India.
On occasion, she also meets with sanitary planners on the construction site and talks to them about the benefits of the drainage systems. ‘It's exciting to see how our technologies have a positive impact on their work,’ she says.
Consistently on a career path
The 34-year-old's career has also taken a positive turn. Malashree Mandya Kumarswamy made rapid progress thanks to good support. For the past year, the design engineer has also been the line manager of a team of five. Since then, she has seen it as her responsibility to encourage others.
If you want to make a career, you have to set yourself goals and pursue them consistently. Hard work pays off, she says. As the mother of a three-year-old daughter, Malashree Mandya Kumarswamy knows what she is talking about. Balancing childcare and a career is not always easy. But Geberit offers many advantages that make it possible to combine the two. ‘The work-life balance is extremely good. I am very happy in my job.’
