There is nothing like a functioning sanitary system in Puri, the holy Hindu city. Since 2010, at least the children of Pentakatha School don’t have to worry about that any longer.
More than 160,000 people live in Puri, an Indian city in the state of Orissa located right on the Bay of Bengal. It is the city of the Hindu Jagannath Temple, which makes Puri one of Hinduism’s holiest cities and also a popular destination for Indians. Many of those living in Puri do not have access to any basic sanitary infrastructure.
Urgent renovation
Founded by the Usthi Foundation, the Pentakatha School in Puri is attended by children aged between 5 and 14. The school has had a fresh-water well and toilets since 1992, the latter of which were in need of renovation after 18 years. In addition to funding the construction of a new sanitary facility with toilets, washbasins and showers, Geberit also financed a solar system for water heating and a simple system to treat waste water. A team including eight apprentices travelled to India to carry out the installation work in the sanitary facilities.
